Good Morning...

I need some advice. My computer died and it had my Itunes library on it.
It is long gone and one of my questions is:

Can I retrieve the material from the Ipod using some sort of software?

I am currently loading songs into the new computer via Itunes using Apple Lossless this time, but it does seem to use much more room.

When loading up the Ipod, can I change the sample rate from Apple Lossless to something else. Or will it just load it onto the Ipod that way. I think that the shuffle converts to 128kbps.

Anyway, I am not sure which direction to go. I have a 30 gb Ipod and I did like having a bunch of tunes on it. But I also want higher quality audio.

Help.

Yes, there is software available to backup the tunes from your ipod to your computer. Do a google search for ipod backup and you should find what you need.

You can also do this without any additional software, iirc. There's a hidden directory with all the AAC files that you can copy back to disk. You ought to be able to reimport that.

And the lesson is.......your pc and ipod cannot be your only copies of your music library. Hard drives will fail. Imagine the disaster if you'd dropped your ipod onto the sidewalk sometime after the computer died!

Digital libraries might be the brave new world - but making backups is a time-honored IT practice that never goes out of style!

Good luck getting your library restored. I know how bummed you must be.

I've used this kind of software and I promise it works...flawlessly. There are several of them and I know they work as advertised.

Why don't you just authorize you new computer & transfer the files from your iPod?

Like it has already been said, you can just open up the directory on your iPod that has all of the music files in it, and copy them back to your iTunes folder. It even puts the track info back on it (metadata). I do it for my co-workers all the time who aren't so tech savvy.

iPodDisk (http://ipoddisk.ourbiti.com/) is free. It requires OS X 10.4 Tiger.

It enables you to mount your iPod as a disk volume and get to your music files.

Authorize your old iPod on your new computer.
