Hi,

I've heard or read somewhere that when transferring an LP to Digital one should - if possible - disable the RIAA EQ in the phono preamp section. In theory, the unEQd signal would then allow for a more accurate declicking. (The proper EQ should then be applied afterwards in the digital domain, e.g. using CoolEdits parametric Equalizer plug-in) Now my question: Has anyone here ever tried this? Are the benefits worth it? (BTW, I'd have to figure out how to set the Black Cube's jumpers for "NO EQ", if it's at all possible).

In other words, reverse the RIAA EQ curve for declicking, then apply the inverse afterwards...

Some people claim this works. I imagine what it does it amplify the sharp transients-clicks-to make it easier for the declicker to identify and zap them. I tried it a few times. It probably takes a few legitamate clicks along with the clicks, as I noticed that the sound was slightly mellower when I used this method.

It seems to me that you don't have to use the inverse of the actual RIAA curve, just some curve to lower the bass frequencies, then apply the exact inverse afterward.

One would probably want to do this in 32-bit float to avoid clipping. If one removes one frequency extreme, it will boost the other, likely to the point of clipping.

I'm not sure if it really helped that much or not-- in theory I suppose it would, but I haven't noticed any difference in my experience. What I did was allow the pre-amp to do it's job, then use the Cool Edit plug-in to REVERSE the RIAA EQ, then process, then put the EQ back. Then you know you're getting the right curve to start with and then when you use Cool Edit, you'll be applying the save curve to turn it off and back on.
