Another thread got me thinking does anyone here know if it was Electro-Voice who made speakers during the late 50s or early 60s that were all inclusive.
I seem to remember my father's stereo having these either 12" or 15" speakers which appeared to have been a three way speaker all in the same frame, which then were mounted in a cabinet.
They appeared to be a woofer, mid-range and then a horn at the center.
They were purchased from Allied Electronics with a Fisher A100 and Garard Lab Series TT around 1960.
Anyone know?

We're/are these considered any good? They certainly did sound ok at the time?
edit: I guess the guy selling these thinks they're good, $695.00 for the pair, 102db sensitivity.
That sounds about right, given the low output of the Fisher with EL84s.

I've never heard those particular speakers, but I've heard many speakers, including EVs, from that era and I love that sound. It was a highly regarded company. I don't know if the current incarnation is related to the original manufacturer. I recall they made some crazy consoles, that had like ten full-range drivers.

We used Electro-Voice Sentry V's, IIRC correctly, for professional sound reinforcement at Terry Hanley Audio Systems in Roxbury Mass. (We did all of Aerosmith's concerts in the early 70's). One engineer I knew bought a pair to use in his home stereo system - they were great speakers for playing rock and roll loud and clear. Never heard any of EV's consumer products. EV made good mics too, I think we used some 635s.

I had some Interface 2 speakers which were the first nice speakers I ever owned. I bought them in 1981. I don't think EV has a consumer line anymore just pro stuff.
Back in 1976, when I bought my first system, I opted for a pair of EV Interface A speakers (box speakers, with a big passive radiator). Very efficient, with solid low frequency performance without being terribly big, they fit well in a dorm room and could play respectably loud with my 40wpc Pioneer integrated amp.
I still have the speakers. About a year ago, I called EV in the Midwest wondering if they could tell me where to find an owner's manual. The gentleman in customer service could not have been more helpful: He photocopied his copy for me, along with some other information about the EV consumer speaker line in the late '70s, and sent in on to me.
Pretty impressive customer service, from a company that clearly still cared about an owner of one of EV's long-discontinued speakers.

Don't forget the Altec 604 Duplex.

We used to use 635's for hammers, but they were a bit light for general hammering. You sure couldn't damage them though. :D OTOH, I used to really like the RE10's 15's 16's and 20's.
I didn't use too many EV speakers, other than some of the outdoor speakers they made. IIRC it was a 12" coax in a fairly small weatherproof conatiner. I worked on a system at the old Western White House in San Clemente. We had two pairs of those EV's mounted up on trees and they covered the pool area pretty well. They played pretty loud too. They could almost drown out the train when it went by.

My high school's band room had a pair of E-V FR12-2 (
http://archives.telex.com/archives/EV/Speakers/EDS/FR12-2%20EDS.pdf) two-ways that many of us (at the time) thought were very good sounding. This was in the mid-80s, and I'm guessing the speakers were manufactured in the mid-70s. Last time I was in the band room was 2003, and the E-V speakers were still going strong.
