I am in the market for a phono preamp that will do a better job then the one built into my technics all-in-one receiver. Does anyone have recomendations for one in the $250 and under category?

For around the same price, you can find a good used preamp, such as the Audiolab 8000C or the Nakamichi CA-5, both of which have very good phono stages, and then you'll have the versatility to upgrade to a nice power amp later on. And in the meantime you can still use your receiver for the power.

I’m using Cambridge Audio Azur 640P and am quite pleased.
Wonderful phono preamp for the price.
