View Full Version : Calling Mr Fremer - VPI Scout Vs. HW 19 MK III
I have been the proud owner of the HW 19 mk III (w/ Mk IV platter and SAMA) for about two years and overall enjoy the sound very much. I was wondering if Mr. Fremer or anyone else out there has an opinion on the new VPI scout (w/ JMW 9 tonearm versus a VPI HW 19 (w/ Audioquest PT 6 tonearm).
Would I better off trading in the HW 19 and going for the Scout which I have read a lot of great things about? My other option is to hold onto the table and work up to an Aries or TNT in a couple of years or simply upgrade the tonearm to a JMW !0 or 10.5.
This analog kid is always trying to improve the front end....

I THINK this was posted elsewhere, but I can't remember the thread name so I'll try to recap: A guy at VPI said that he'd hold onto the HW19 because it can be upgraded into a better turntable than the Scout is, which currently doesn't have any upgrade path. I'd imagine with your SAMA and MkIV platter, you're already close to being past it, if not already. Perhaps the arm would be a good next step. Last I checked, Tom Port may have a JMW for sale, then again, it could be gone by now.

I was told if you go to a full-blown IV , it is better than a scout. I have also heard that some people don't put alot of stock in unipivot arms, like the one on the Scout. Aries seems to be the way to go if you are looking that way.
