Hi All,
I'm looking for a good cartridge that works well with a used TD147 i recently bought off ebay. A nice budget one in the $150 or lower range i would think.
Its a p mount and comes with the Audio Technica AT3482P cartridge that i'm thinking i should replace before i start spinning my vinyl.
Any suggestions from some experienced cart people appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Your Thorens can use 1/2" mount cartridge fine. Your original P-Mount cartridge was used with an adapter for 1/2" mount tonearm headshells. The Stanton 681 EEE-S Mk. II & Mk. III with original style New York Stereohedron stylus, Audio-Technica AT 440 MLa, Ortofon OM Series will work superbly here. All above choices under $130!

Please check this recent discussion on cartridges for the TD160 (very similar to the TD147, depending on the arm):

I've got a TD147 and (as my avatar indicates) I am currently using a Sumiko Blue Point Special Evo III (at $350 a touch above your price range). I concur on the Stanton 681EEE, also the Shure M97XE is a nice choice.

So do you like your TD147?

I'm really pleased with it. I was previously using a TD145, which is also a very good turntable, but I find the 147 feels much more solid, the switches and other hardware work better, and I really prefer the updated tonearm, which seems to track better than the older unit. In fact I recently bought an extra armwand so I can use different cartridges in the 147. I also really like the look of the 147 (photo of mine below with Adcom cartridge mounted).
I have not done enough A/B listening to determine whether there is a significant difference in sound between the 145 and the 147.
One thing that I've found on both the 145 and the 147 is that the auto stop/tonearm lift function works intermittently. I've adjusted the 145 so it works reliably, but I have not had time to fiddle with the 147 yet.
