This could be good..Or bad on so many levels.....

Ricci Revs Up Speed Racer

Christina Ricci is joining Larry and Andy Wachowski's live-action adaptation of the 1960s cartoon Speed Racer for Warner Brothers Pictures and producer Joel Silver, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman already have boarded the high-octane project, which is based on the anime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida for Japanese audiences and later imported to the United States.

Speed centers on a young race car driver, Speed (Hirsch), and his quest for glory in his thundering, gadget-laden vehicle, Mach 5. Ricci will star as Speed's girlfriend, Trixie, his formidable ally on and off the track.

The show revolved around Speed's family. In the big-screen adaptation, Goodman will play Pops, a race car owner and builder. Sarandon is on board as Pops' wife, the backbone of the family as well as of the Mach 5 Go Racing Team. The Wachowskis, who are writing and directing, are eyeing a summer shoot in Berlin with a summer 2008 release.

"Speed Racer" was a favorite cartoon of mine when I was growing up so I'm looking forward to this film. If you want to see the cast, go to:

My God, John Goodman is a dead ringer for "Pops".

Aren't there some things in your past you just can't bottle? This would be like re-doing Simba, the White Lion with extra CGI frames in-between to make the animation less choppy.

From the actor bios:
"With his captivating screen presence and versatile and powerful performances, EMILE HIRSCH has earned a reputation as the foremost leading man of his generation."

Good to see they're not trying to justify casting a b-level actor in the pivotal title role...

I totally understand what you are saying - however, I love the cartoon and in many ways it's terrible!

I'm interested in what comes out of this

keep in mind I have never seen (nor will I ever see) any of the matrixes

Yeah, me too! I'm not going to damn it before it's even released. If it captures any of the essence of the animated series, then that'll be great.

I take it the timeline for this film is put before Speed knows the truth about Racer X.

The cartoons were awful - let's face it, a grown-up would never consider them good at any level whatsoever.

That's what makes them so special.

Remember Clutch Cargo? That was AWFUL. And I love it - I'd buy them on DVD in a heartbeat. Speed Racer is like that (at least for me).

John Goodman IS pops. They nailed that one perfectly. Christina Ricci could do a great Trixie. I'd use someone else for Speed, though - there's so much potential there.

Also, have you seen the real life Mach V? I saw it yesterday (can't remember where). It's perfectly done!

Found it...

I think I need one of those. Right NOW.

Yeah! Absolutely agree. Which begs the question, is re-making it with production values and live action really the best way to respect our memories? I assume they must respect the audience's love for the cheezy toons, or else they wouldn't have bought the rights...?

So, why not just crank out 44 more half-hours, and run them on tv for a couple years instead, so a whole new audience can enjoy them...?

....is re-making it with production values and live action really the best way to respect our memories?

how does "respecting our memories" have anything to do with it?

it has already been remade and updated at least twice, with plans for another updated cartoon

have the past remakes interfered with your memories of the original?

do they impede your ability to view the oldies on DVD?

and even if the movie is terrible, why would (or indeed, how could) one hold that against the oldie?

PS

....Which begs the question....

I do this out of love: http://begthequestion.info
