i am looking for suggestions to replace a set of stock Sovtek 6922's with another set of tubes. I would like recommendations from the tube heads here on what they suggest. FYI I am not looking for some other kind of sound then the Sovtek's provide, they simple need to be replaced and I have not heard the the hardware at all with them. So I really don't have a point of reference for the sound. That said I am sure some of you do have an opinion on the sound this tube produces and some of it's competitors. Don't let price be a concern on what you recommend, but I am looking for the whole price range of recommendations. Thanks so much for the info....

Email Kevin Deal on the site and ask him. FWIK, Sovtek's should be AOK, but let him reccomend some others....
To make it fun, you can try some NOS from Ebay and experiment! 6922's shoulnd't be very expensive all around.

If you don't want to go to NOS, Try Ei "Gold Elite" 6dj8's. A drop in replacement that I have found to sound very sweet and are not expensive ($11-$12 each). They also have had nice things to say about them at Audio Asylum. A good seller is Jim Mcshane. Google search under his name. Tell 'em Dean sent ya!

If I didn't have NOS tubes in my closet, I would choose JJ/Tesla E88CC.
But I have NOS tubes....
The Tube Store has a nice selection, though NOS types are very expensive.

I have the Amperex 7308s running as driver tubes in my amp, and four of them in the phono section of my Rogue 66 Magnum. Mike is right, this is a great tube!

Thanks for the back-up - my pair are driving things through my Musical Fidelity buffer stage; that came with Phillips 6922's that were military surplus NOS - not too bad sounding, but when I scraped together the geets for those 7308's - wow! Read up on their identifying characteristics - gotta have those date codes etched in on the bottom of the tube....

As I stated recently in another thread, good and reliable 6922's are getting hard to come by. As a result NOS are getting more expensive.
Kevin Deal is the best dealer to talk to. If you want to stick with Sovtek's sound (which can be very good), stay away from new stock - they have become quite unreliable. Deal has older (but new) Sovteks which hold up much better and sound much better than today's Sovteks. Give him a call.

I don't know what equiptment you are using or the tube position - gain/follower. But for 6922's try and find some Siemens Halske 1960's. In that tube family I prefer just about any 6dJ8 (over a 6922) and would try and fine some 1960's Amperex Holland Orange Globes or certain Amperex 6DJ8 Bugle Boy's. For 7308's try and find some Amperex 1960's USA White labels. Otherwise it's the Telsa, Ei Elites or 1970's Russian. It really is hard to find a good sounding 6volt tube these days though. Give Andy at Vintage Tube Services a call. If price is no object then contact Tube World.
