Just curious what Box Sets most would wish for at this point that have not been done.
Here's a few of my wishes:
1. Buddy Holley
2. George Harrison
3. Neil Young

It'd be nice to see a box set with everything Gram Parsons ever recorded on it...

A Buddy Holly box set ain't gonna happen until a lot of legal red tape is cleared away. There was a Complete Buddy Holly LP box set released back in the 80's, and one would have thought it would be possible to simply reissue it on CD, but apparently not.
The much delayed Neil Young Archives boxed set(s) will come out ... eventually. The Buffalo Springfield box set was delayed for years, but now that that's finally out, perhaps it won't be too much longer (say, 2-3 years) before we see the first Archives box.
I know that George Harrison mentioned a possible box set in an interview he gave a while back. But I think we'll see more reissues (w/bonus tracks) first.
How about a Bob Seger box set? All of his early material has been out of print for a long time. And I read an interview where he said he had enough unreleased material to fill 20 (!!!) albums. And the single disc greatest hits album is woefully inadequate.

SPIRIT (A four disc set could be *AWESOME* if they picked the right stuff)
RUSH (I don't know why I want it, I have all the albums...)
KISS (Four discs, I PICK THE SONGS)
BLUE OYSTER CULT (or at least a remastered IMAGINOS)
BLACK SABBATH (ALL TIME PERIODS, EVEN "SQUATZILLA" JAMES DIO)
FRANK ZAPPA (not a chance! Please Gail?)
AC/DC (I love Bon Scott, but I want a career spanning set!)
STYX (as long as it sounds better than the regular CDs, and no LIVE CRAP)
I would also go for another Jethro Tull box set...Maybe "Forty Years on the Road" in 2008!!??
Those would keep me busy for a while.

"Under Wheels of Confusion" is pretty comprehensive. Have you checked it out?

How about sending Roger Waters and Dave Gilmore to a corporate love-in so they can give us a REAL Pink Floyd set not just their albums collected together and put in a box.
So that maybe I'll get to hear "Vegetable Man", "Scream thy Last Scream", the alternate "Flaming", mono "Saucerful" and those classic BBC tracks, in great fidelity while I still have my hearing.

I think whatever artist they consider doing a box set on, it should at least contain material not available elsewhere (longer versions, mono/stereo, 7" versions, remixes :D , live....). Then there'll be reason enough for die hard fans to buy such an item. If they just give us the "hits" or the "best", the real fans'll already have that stuff.
Just my thoughts.

Beatles Singles Collection...
A 3 CD set of all the Beatles UK/US A & B-sides back-to back. From Love Me Do up to the 70's reissues, like Julia & Got To get You Into My Life. Much the same as the Rolling Stones did over a decade ago. The cover of the boxed set could have all the picture sleeves splashed all over....
I know...I'm dreaming again! Got to stop this!

I like a box set containing all the alternate takes, etc. from the sessions of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music.

Agreed. There's a lot of stuff that this label made that hasn't seen the light of day in years, and I'm sure it may be suffering from lots of red tape. Someone posted a CD via MP3 on the newsgroups called "Apple Fritters" which from vinyl LP and 7" sources collected many of the rarer music from the label like Ronnie Spector, Trash, Lesa Cormier & The Sundown Playboys, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, well.. BEATLES... and Badfinger too... Would be an interesting archeology. Looks like it would make an interesting boot, as I don't think something like this would be done i this lifetime.
Oh, and a box set of Cameo/Parkway. Dream, dream dream ON!

I like record company compilations.
Brian, there already is a Beatles Singles Collection, but the songs are all on a set of CDs, 2 songs each.

But did the Beatles singles collection use the original mono single mixes?

David,
Yes, the Beatles Singles Collection contains mono mixes of all the songs from "Love Me Do" through "Get Back". There are some interesting differences in mixes and some better mixes, in my opinion, especially on "Paperback Writer" and "Hey Jude" - much more punch than on the stereo versions.

Bill

Exactly! wasting a CD which can accomodate 78 minutes of music for only 5 to 10 minutes? I think the singles collection cost around $199. Those songs could have fit on three CDs for around $45. Do I hear GREED?
Plus I would love to hear US singles such as Nowhere Man, Eight Days A Week in their mono mixes.
I think the Beatles catalog needs an overhaul!
Thanks, Grant T for your input!

Well, you're not paying $200 because there are 20 CDs or whatever - the CDs themselves cost next to nothing to produce. You're paying that because it's a "collector's item". Yeah, making that many CDs will cost a *little* more than say, 2, but most of that extra money is just profit...
Plus I would love to hear US singles such as Nowhere Man, Eight Days A Week in their mono mixes.
Well, Eight Days A Week is on the (terrible sounding) BFS CD in mono.

I have a few of the original Capitol singles from their mid-to-later period and the sound of the Singles box for those songs are pretty accurate.
The first thing that hits you about their singles is that they all have BASS and they are compressed.

Yes, you do pay more for a collector's item, but my point was it is more economical for the consumer and wouldn't gouge him to use all the disc space. The Beatles 1962/1966 was put on two CDs when one would have accomodated the 62 minutes of music. That inflated the price by 100%. How many complaints did that illicit? The price of a three CD box is normally going to be far less than a 20 CD box. In fact I think the CD singles ran about 6 to 8 bucks a piece. So together that makes the collection run $120 to $160. So yes, you are paying more for a collector's item.
But, Wouldn't you prefer to have all the singles reamastered back-to-back on 3 CDs or juggle 20?
That was all I was saying.

Well, again, that's just the record company screwing you. "This is 2 CDs so we can charge twice as much." Who knows if a 1 CD set would have been any cheaper - "2 LPs on 1 CD!!!"
Yeah, I get your point, it's just that from a production standpoint, the number of CDs in a set doesn't make that much difference. It all has to do with marketing...

I'd love to see a George Harrison boxed set. As long is it isn't mastered by Peter Mew.

Luke,
i couldn't have said it better myself. You're absolutely right about record companies sticking it to us. That's what I meant by greed in my previous post!! I'm sure all of us would love to see the Beatles catalog get a decent overhaul: absolutely no no-noise whatsoever, original mixes (not like the remixing on the Rubber Soul and Help CDs) and good utilization of CD compacity by using rare mono mixes and bonus tracks. I hope I live to see it! But I may be dreaming!!
In fact, I appreciate your reviews of CD purchases such as the Oo releases. It alerts all of us! I bought LAL Deluxe and I too thought the quality has suffered from reissue to reissue. Jon Astley should go. I thought his excuses on choosing the wrong Young Man Blues for Odds & Sods were an insult! He even used Under My Thumb w/o Pete's lead guitar work!
Take care, Luke. I look forward to all your many insightful, and informative posts!! I've learned alot!!
Brian :)

Hi, I'm a new poster here. Van Morrison would be my top choice for the box set treatment.

My nominee is a Nirvana box set. Love them or hate them, this music group is THE most influential collection of musicians of the last generation of Rock Music, but still their catalog has been horribly neglected. You'd think they were the Sex Pistols!
Aside from the promise that one is now on hold because of legal difficulties, what box set the do produce, will have to rival the bootleg box set titled "Into The Dark" on the old Alley Cat label. More demos than you could consume...a real rarity full, and thoughtful set, not for the casual listener.
Alley Cat struck again with "hallucinogenic recipe" for Pearl Jam...a 5CD tour de force of pre-Pearl Jam demos and outtakes, with only 2CDs for one full live concert.
For music lovers who want more bang for their buck, bootleggers know what to give the consumer, and make the hoop higher for the official Music Companies to shoot for !
This time it's an impossible task!!! Let's hope for the best.
