My first proper stereo component system after I left college in the early-80's included an amp and tuner made by a company called SAE, which I purchased in excellent used condition at a dirt cheap price through the local penny saver. Unfortunately I didn't have it too long because my apartment was robbed about a week after my purchase.:( Through the haze of 20 years, I seem to recall that I got pretty decent sound out of them. Anyway, my question is: Are/were SAE components considered audiophile quality gear?

Hi Jim,
I used to have a complete SAE system including tuner, pre, amp, cassette and parametric equalizer. I felt the amp was probably the best part of the system. Some of the "computer" based pieces such as the parametric and preamp were a bit flakey. Had to be unplugged and replugged in occasionally to reset them. Don't recall the model numbers.
Overall my recollections are that SAE is not "audiophile" grade.

Hi Joseph,
Yeah, come to think of it, I had that parametric equalizer too. And the "Pop and Click Assassin" for scratchy records, as well. I *did* like the cool blue digital display, tho.

A friend of mine still has his SAE stack, and I would have to agree with the above; definitely not audiophile. Hard, bright and a bit forward, but with good bottom end.

I still have my SAE Two receiver. I use it to power a pair of ceiling speakers in my house. The thing is built like a tank.
