What do you guys use for very simple audio track editing?
I've just been using the audio editor in Nero, but this morning, when I tried to cut a minute of dead track from the end of an mp3, a message popped up informing me that "NeroMP3Pro" has "expired" and not only could the edited file not be saved, but upon closing the program, the mp3 itself was completely shredded!
When I tried to click on it, all data had been erased and it was now an empty file. It says 0mb. :realmad:
Luckily, I had a backup or else I'd be really pissed. But now I'd appreciate some suggestions for reliable unlimited freeware for very basic track editing, like removing silence at the end of an mp3 file or something to that extent. Something simple and easy to use.
What do you guys recommend?
Thanks!
Windows PC?
If it was a Mac I'd recommend "Audacity" - it's free and it's pretty easy to use.

Spin It Again - far simpler than anything else without compromising quality. It takes a file, splits it into tracks, allows you to edit the audio, allows tagging and outputting to WAV or MP3. Even has voice guidance - you will be an expert user within 5 minutes! Free to try (3 rips) and $35 to buy.

Perhaps Goldwave (
http://www.goldwave.com/) can work for you.
Made for PC. Not sure if the free version is fully functional any longer, but it still may do the trick for you.

I use Adobe Audition for virtually all of my audio tasks.

If you use Audacity, keep an eye on it. Sometimes it wants to quit recording after a short period of time. Why? I don't know. I use Sound Forge 7, Acid 4 and Sonar 4. I also have experience with Adobe Audition, but I don't care for the 2.0 interface. As far as free software goes, Audacity is probably your best choice, though.

For editing mp3 files, I recommend "mp3DirectCut". It works entirely in the mp3 domain. When editing with Audition (for example) and saving the edited file as a mp3 there will be a loss, because the file gets decoded (while loading into the editor) and encoded again (while saving on hard disc).
Another nice editor for cutting starts end endings is "mpTrim", also working in the mp3 domain.

I would second Adobe Audition. (Used to be cool edit)
Best editor for chopping up audio I have used. Way better for this than Wavelab etc. Best of all, download an old demo version of cool edit and you can stil save files etc.
Sometimes the best things really are free !

I have an Audacity program laying around here, but with Adobe Audition as my weapon of choice, I never had any need to try it.
Anybody comfortable enough with both to discuss the differences when it comes to simple editing, or multitrack layering?
