I just got this in the mail. Im very, very excited. All three titles look like winners for me. I'll get all three, but Im going to watch that Mingus/Dolphy first!!!
Hello Jazz Icons fans,
I pleased to officially announce that we have the first three artists
cleared and are in negotiations with the other three. The three
artists that we've cleared are the following..........
Wes Montgomery
Dexter Gordon
Charles Mingus
As I mentioned in an earlier e-mail TDK will no longer be handling
the distribution but rather Naxos Of America who is the sole reason
that series did so well in America. I've never seen a company believe
so strongly in a project and not just give me a bunch of B.S. (as all
of the major labels do often) but these guys spent alot of money on
advertising and that really made the difference, so I know we're in
great hands. Here's the breakdown for the three titles in order as
they will appear on the DVD. Remember with all of them we've gone
back to the original masters and will be restoring the video as well
as the audio. Some of you may have seen some of these before perhaps
you have bootleg copies but please don't write back asking me not to
release it because you personally have a bootleg copy of it (Believe
it or not I've had a few on this list ask me that before and you know
who you are) Our goal with this series is to release what we feel is
the best footage and hopefully unseen to many and to make sure all of
the artists involved are paid properly. I will give you all of the
personnel later after I've verified their names.
Here's the first three as soon as the other titles are cleared I will
let you know. Our goal is an early September release so please help
us get an early buzz going by letting everyone know.

I would be very interested in the Coltrane DVD--90 minutes! It seems like most documentaries on Trane feature the same 3 television performances: Jazz Casual in '63, CBS TV with Miles Davis in '59, and the '61 performance with Eric Dolphy.

Here is the official press release. All titles hit the market on Sep 4th. Start saving and GET THEM ALL!!!
SECOND SERIES OF JAZZ ICONS™ DVDS TO BE RELEASED!
NEW SERIES OF JAZZ ICONS™ DVDS FEATURES VINTAGE UNSEEN CONCERTS FEATURING JOHN COLTRANE, DAVE BRUBECK, DUKE ELLINGTON, SARAH VAUGHAN, DEXTER GORDON, WES MONTGOMERY, CHARLES MINGUS
"The release of Jazz Icons™ is like the unearthing of a musical time capsule-an audio-visual treasure trove of the music that changed the world. From an educational standpoint this series is a gift to our culture." - Quincy Jones
“This is like the discovery of a bonanza of previously unknown manuscripts of plays by William Shakespeare.” - Nat Hentoff, Wall Street Journal
The eagerly anticipated release of the second series of Jazz Icons™ DVDs is here. Reelin' In The Years Productions and Naxos are proud to announce the September 4, 2007 release of the next seven titles in the illustrious DVD series featuring performances by John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, and Charles Mingus.
Filmed in Europe between 1958 and 1966, this set of Jazz Icons™ DVDs features concerts by seven of the most influential jazz artists of the 20th century captured in their prime and accompanied by some of the most legendary sidemen of the day. Previously forgotten or lost in the vaults of TV studios throughout Europe (in some cases for nearly 50 years!), they are now being made available for the first time.
The running time for the DVDs range from 60 to 120 minutes. All seven Jazz Icons™ titles will be sold separately and as a deluxe boxed set with a bonus eighth disc featuring additional rare, never-before-seen, performances.
The first series of Jazz Icons™ DVDs featuring classic vintage concerts by Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, Count Basie, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Buddy Rich, and Chet Baker, was released in September 2006 to universal critical acclaim, including feature stories in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times, as well as reviews in The New York Times and USA Today (including their holiday gift guide.)
Each of the new Jazz Icons™ DVDs features one or more concerts filmed live in television studios and concert halls throughout Europe between 1958 and 1966, one of the most creative periods in jazz history. All seven DVDs feature performances that have never been officially released, and in many cases, the material is newly discovered and was never broadcast. In addition, every performance in the Jazz Icons™ DVD series has been transferred and re-mastered from the best-quality original masters yielding excellent sound and video.
Among the wealth of highlights in the second series of Jazz Icons™ DVDs:
o Three incredible John Coltrane concerts (filmed in 1960, 1961 and 1965) featuring over 90 minutes of music and including sideman appearances by several other jazz legends - Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, McCoy Tyner, Eric Dolphy, and Elvin Jones. The 1960 concert, recorded in Germany with Miles Davis' band (sans Miles), features recently discovered performance footage that had been lost for over 45 years.
o Two historic Dave Brubeck concerts from 1964 and 1966 featuring the classic Quartet with Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello.
o An amazing 80-minute Duke Ellington big band concert from 1958 (the earliest known complete Ellington show on film) featuring Clark Terry, Johnny Hodges, and Ray Nance.
o Three never-before-seen Sarah Vaughan shows (two from 1958 and one from 1964) showcasing "The Divine One" in great voice.
o Three Wes Montgomery concerts from 1965 (a guitar-lovers dream) filmed in Holland, Belgium and England with liner notes by Pat Metheny and an afterword by Carlos Santana.
o Three Dexter Gordon concerts filmed in 1963 and 1964 in Holland, Belgium and Switzerland that highlight the Bebop (and beyond) legend's classic style and silky tone.
o Three exceptional concerts by Charles Mingus performed in April 1964 featuring the great Eric Dolphy on alto sax, flute and bass clarinet and recorded less than three months before Dolphy's death. Although the three concerts, recorded in Norway, Sweden and Belgium, are barely a week apart they showcase the band’s incredible diversity with each show featuring unique performances and arrangements.
Each DVD also includes a 24-page booklet with insightful and informative essays by noted jazz historians as well as previously unseen photos and memorabilia.
The second series of Jazz Icons™ DVDs will be unveiled at this year's Detroit Jazz Festival (August 31 - September 3). The series will be an integral part of the four-day festival, including performances from both Jazz Icons™ DVD series being broadcast on the Jumbotron screens during all set changes on the main stages. Total festival attendance is estimated at 750,000.
In addition, Reelin' In The Years Productions and Naxos are proud to announce their partnership with The International Association for Jazz Education™ to further increase jazz awareness in schools. Proceeds from each sale of second series DVDs will go to the IAJE's Campaign for Jazz, providing support for student scholarships, jazz advocacy, and teacher training. To quote IAJE Executive Director Bill McFarlin, "The value the Jazz Icons series brings to the music classroom is incalculable. This is American jazz history of the highest order, and an unprecedented opportunity to see and hear our jazz masters at the height of their creative genius. We are proud to be a partner in this remarkable program, and are committed to bringing it to a larger audience."

Including the first nine DVDs in the Jazz Icons™ series, Reelin' In The Years Productions has produced over 30 DVDs including the four volume The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1969 DVD series, released to universal critical acclaim, commercial success and numerous industry awards. WOW! I'm very interested in the Vaughan, Mingus and Coltrane DVDs, but I wouldn't mind seeing ALL of these.
Don't miss the information (shown at the bottom of post #2) that the upcoming second series of the Jazz Icons DVDs will be available in a box set with an exclusive bonus DVD.
I've bought several of the Jazz Icons DVDs from the first series, as well as DVDs released by the parent company, "Reelin' In The Years." All the titles I've seen are extremely high quality productions. The people running "Reelin' In The Years" seem to be real music lovers, which is a rarity in the business these days...

I'll get the Trane, Dexter, Wes and Mingus DVDs as soon as they are available from Caiman over the Amazon.fr or co.uk Marketplace (very low shipping rates).
The titles from the first batch are outstanding, with picture and sound quality much better than most other DVDs with vintage (50's and 60's) jazz TV productions.

Wow.
I just saw the first segment of the Trane DVD, from 1960 with the Miles Davis Rhythm section and then with Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson. I am speechless.
This is probably my favorite of the series and I havent even watched the first half of the DVD.
Highly recommended

I'll get the Dexter Gordon and Mingus. Maybe Ellington & Coltane too.

I got the box set on Friday and have since watched/listened to the Brubeck, Duke, Mingus, and Vaughan. In short- wow. Awesome, awesome stuff. These DVDs really are a dream come true.
In long (and in order of what I watched):
1. Brubeck
Obviously I dig Dave but I was never a huge fan per say, at least compared to other giants of the genre and everybody else in this box set. But of course this DVD captures their Time Out quartet, and Dave and drummer Joe Morello are a thrill to watch. Desmond sounds pretty but got less time than I had expected. The interplay between that rhythm section really is a pleasure to watch. And that first Take Five drum solo is now a must-own for fans.
2. Duke Ellington
The most fun of the DVDs so far. Duke being ultra-cool, Ray Nance as the ultimate entertainer, some singing, a killer drum solo- great great stuff.
3. Charles Mingus
Mingus is prob my favorite musician ever so- yeah, this is good. That first version of Meditations on Integration is a monster. I need to watch this a few more times to process all of it. It's by far the longest DVD, and has multiple versions of some tunes, and there's just so MUCH going. Byard comping like an free player than going into a stride solo; Dolphy forcing tempo changes; Jordan swinging and signaling what I presume are chords to Coles to comp Dolphy w/ horns; etc and so on. Oh, and also Charles Mingus plays on it and he's pretty good. :)
4. Dexter Gordon
Real nice, straight-up, no BS performances. Just solid stuff from the baddest hornman of his day.
5. Sarah Vaughan
My favorite singer ever delivers. Her since of rhythm just sleighs me every time and watching her use her body language to guide it and her band is must-see for fans.
The 'Trane DVD for some reason has trouble playing in my computer, but so have a couple of other DVDs so I don't know when I'll get to that. Also can't wait to check out Wes because guitar players are very fun to watch.

The Wes Montgomery disc is awesome.
This performance of Jingles is worth it alone.
And then those beautiful angles of his fingers in the last set- I bet a guitar player can learn just from watching it.

Ok, so I ordered the box set and the Coltrane disc doesn't play in my computer. So I had amazon.com send me another set (apparently they couldn't just send the one disc 'cause it's part of the set) and this Coltrane disc also doesn't play.
Is anyone else having issues with their Coltrane DVD?

Nope, not me. And I have a DVD player that gives me a lot of headaches, but not with this disc.

Tower.com has these for $14.95 (free shipping on orders over $20) No tax on most orders (I think all states, except Florida?)
Just noticed the price has been reduced to $13.61 at Tower.com (the price changes)

Not to stray to far off topic. But has anyone picked up any of the other vids from "Reelin" in the years"?
Some of the clips from Freddie King and Albert King look really cool.I am wondering about getting these also.
Im definitely going to get the jazz DVDs

Tower shipped my Ellington and Wes DVDs right away. Hope they arrive soon.
I am still watching that Mingus DVD, Pretty heavy stuff, I usually can only take one or two performances at the time, too much going on.
That Jaki Byard solo on Take the 'A Train, followed by a great solo by Dolphy...too much!!!
