View Full Version : Interesting VPI News...
I just heard from a good source that they are soon (few weeks) to upgrade the JMW 9 arm to have a 12.5 base so one gets adjustable VTA on the fly. I'm not clear if this is on the Super Scoutmaster only or the Scoutmaster as well.
Felt the VPI owners on the board might be interested in this news. :)
Hmmm, thought more VPI owners would be excited. :)

The JMW-9 already does VTA on the fly I've used it myself.

Perhaps Lee didn't read the manual.

Could you please elaborate on this (how to do it).

VTA on the regular JMW-9 is not "on the fly". You need the supplied wrench to loosen two screws at the base collar. Can't do this while the record is playing.

So, you loosen the screws before hand and adjust the VTA while it's playing, finding the correct VTA. To me if you can adjust the VTA while it's playing, that's on the fly.

I haven't dared to adjust it while the record is playing. It would require a far steadier hand than mine...
I believe the higher end VPI arms have a knob to adjust VTA without touching the actual tonearm base.

The 10.x & 12.x tonearms do have knobs to adjust VTA and it works pretty well. This was one of the main reasons I upgraded to the Aries 3. You could get pretty carried away with adjusting VTA but I tend to tweak it only when the bass sounds a little tubby so far.

That's not quite the same but it can be done if you have a steady hand. The nice thing about the knob adjustment is that you know exactly how much you are adjusting and it is easy to reset to the previous setting or to different settings for different thicknesses of records...in other words it is repeatable.

Yeah, it's a nifty feature to have. However, I'm a "minimal adjustment" kinda audiophile.
I'd rather not have things like triode/ultralinear switches, tone controls, digital filter slope selectors, easily selectable phono loading options, etc.
Not that they are bad per se, but I've found them terribly distracting. And then you end up with that dilemma: have I chosen the correct setting?

That's a huge difference right there. I don't mess with my VTA pretty much for that reason. I wouldn't be able to precisely repeat a setting...

Sorry for the late response. It's not really adjustable on the fly like the 10.5 and 12.5 arms which have the VTA dial. I tried it once but since the base is loose, you can do some damage if you are not careful.
The benefit here is that you don't have to fiddle with the set screws and you have a numeric guide as to what the height of the arm is.

Do you know if this is a factory upgrade or individual owners can do it at home?

I don't know yet. I'm hoping you can do a trade in for the original base and add soem incremental dollars for the upgrade.

Wait for the next upgrade wih remote controlled motorized VTA adjustment ;)

You would think that would be quite possible....we have remote cart loading and all that now in the audio world...

Townsend has/had a remote VTA feature.
Heard from two more people who had a conversation with the Weisfelds regarding the adjustable VTA feature. Seems like this is definitely in the works for the ability to add a 10.5 arm. Scout fans rejoice!

Glad I've got a good old HW19jr. I can adjust VTA on the fly by rising or lowering the platter.

Very few have that knowledge. I use a flat screwdriver tip attached to a handle , a 2ft length of copper water pipe. The tip is hex shaped and I can rotate its position.
When you think about, unless your turntable is near your listening chair, how can you accurately assess the sound changes brought on by different VTA settings when doing it "on the fly" while the record is playing? I know MY system sounds different when sitting in front of it than it does from a standing position near the speakers. What's really needed is remote VTA. Only then can you clearly hear where the "mark" is with each record. I can't believe that someone hasn't come out with a remote VTA control.

I have Senn 600 and Stax headphones. I use those when I adjust VTA. Works great!

Here's the patent that's for sale from my friend Sal Calaio.Sals slowing down
nowadays but still hopes to make some tables of his own with this invention
included. If Weisfeld or anyone else really wanted to take their turntables to
this whole new level and pass the technology on to all of us they could.I'll
have pictures of my Expressimo Audio Custom turntable up this weekend.
