Twenty years ago, this would have been on every drive-inn marquee at one point during the summer. I just hope this doesn't get lost at the indie cinemas.

Christina Ricci having lost about 25 pounds and no longer having that great voluptuous figure. That's what I don't like. That girl used to have some body. Now she looks like every other underweight Hollywood stick figure.

I thought you were talking about BLACK SNAKE MOAN the old song by Leadbelly.
This is a movie. Ah, Visual Arts Forum.
Oops, carry on.

I loved it. Thought it was fun on a stick.
And the movie's title does come from the Leadbelly song.

I saw Christina on one of the late night talk shows recently (Leno maybe?) and thought she looked different (less sexy than before) but couldn't put my finger on just why. I guess it was the 25 pounds. She didn't need to lose 10 pounds let alone 25.:shake:

I hear that Samuel Jackson actually sings. Does he sound convincing doing the blues?

Yes, Jackson does do a great job, singin' and playin'. Son Volt plays a bluesman in a film loop interview from decades ago, not really sure what his character is supposed to represent in the film's continuity.
My only nit about the movie is, there seems to have been a bit too much expository snipped out of the middle for pacing sake. When she asks him to play, it kind of comes out of nowhere. And, I get little feel for just how much time passes in her "lockdown".
I love her because she is such a changeling - see her change.

She was delicious looking in the suits and heels when she did an Ally McBeal stint. I watched just for her.

I'd like to see this movie. I looked up the lyrics to the song (this site claims Blind Lemon Jefferson):

Am I remembering it right - didn't Justin Timberlake's "friend" comment that it was only about a week since he shipped out when he returned?
Plus, the preacher came by to see him (and stayed for dinner) because it was the second (?) time he'd missed church.
My assumption is that the time period for the whole film covered about a week and a half.

Well, if the real question is "what's not to like" - I'm kinda repulsed at the idea of this film (at least from the previews).
An outside of society man holding a scantily-clad girl hostage? Uh... I don't want to see a movie like that.
I do like the actors involved... but it's not my cuppa tea.
Then again, "Deliverance" is the scariest movie I've ever seen and the Ned Beatty "pig" scene is not the most shudder-inducing moment to me...
"Zodiac" is about as dark a film as I can handle.
Again, I have not seen this film but the subject matter is exactly what I don't like.
Jeff
P.S. Hated "Silence of the Lambs", too - well executed; not a movie I would put myself through again.

I'll stick with my original assertion - she looks better when she's not skinny (as most women do).
I hear that Samuel Jackson actually sings. Does he sound convincing doing the blues?
It's kind of convincing. You can tell that he was concentrating very hard to play the guitar, but the vocals were rather authentic-sounding! Reminded me of that delta blues sound I love so much. But the guitar? Eh, it's just an actor who learned how to play the guitar in 3 months..
Edit:
Justin Timberlake sucked.

I clicked because I was wondering what a Blind Lemon Jefferson song was doing in the Visual Arts section.

Sam's vocals were his own but he was obviously miming the guitar.
I'm not sure what I think about this movie. It was an overheated stew of exaggerated Hollywood notions about the blues and wild women, but it was lively and well-acted. I think it began taking itself too seriously at the end -- it was more fun when it started out as a kitschy exploitation movie.
