Everyone complains about Hollywood remaking all the classic movies. What should be remade are movies that had a good premise but poor realisation. Someone mentioned Logan's Run in another thread. Although the original has its devotees, I think the remake coming out later this year is a good idea as there's definite room for improvement. (They can, of course, still completely ruin it.)

I'd like to see Lady Sings the Blues done right. It would be hard to do worse than the original in terms of accuracy...or relevance to Billie Holiday.

What would you pick?

"A Star Is Born" with Elvis instead of Kris Kristofferson. We're not going to see that I guess.

Is that the one where they go into the body all shrunk?

Good topic. I completely agree that remakes of films may be a good idea when better serving an idea the original attempt did not achieve well. If it covers certain ground so much better, you might as well have not been there before.

One possibility that may be interesting is Xanadu (1980). That the original is a partial failure makes the idea of a remake interesting. It would be difficult to do any worse with the basic concept than that fiasco did. You can barely tell what the concept was ever meant to be. Not to say nobody could pull it off, but really it's hard to see how someone inspired could possibly make a worse movie in terms of concept, story, writing, and other aspects on the production side. What the original has is a great soundtrack and two particular key cast members in Olivia and Gene Kelly. One can't replace those two members of the cast, and to make matters much more difficult any name options today that I'm aware of are hopelessly paltry. Then there's every likelihood that remaking the soundtrack would be downright painful. But maybe something else could be done with it; something of an opposite where it's not so much a musical with skates and ***** as being a good movie about the concepts of trying to discover and realize a dream, and the concepts of the muse and divine or extraordinary intervention in a person's life, inspirations and fate. There is something more behind those ruins.

Yep. With today's effects.....could be great. Although I think Inner Space beat em to it.

Ya know, after Battlestar Galactica & Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, I'm on board with this idea.

Howabout let's re-do Borat, only this time with Yakov Smirnoff?

Or, Rocky IV with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and that Pets.com sock-puppet (his catch phrase - "Everybody deserves a 4th chance...!")

Michael Bay directs Michel Gondry's The Science Of Sleep.

And finally, in his last-ditch bid for an Oscar, Peter O'Toole IS...The Geico Gekko!:goodie: (I smell "sequel" already...!)

I've looked into "Charley Varrick", but Universal is holding it and is still contemplating a remake.

I think it would be a cool little remake and put it out with the original title of the movie: "The Last of the Independents".

I'm still waiting for "The Six Billion Dollar Man." I think that would be awesome!

I've been saying for years that some studio should remake The Tingler. With the proper CGI (as opposed to a rubber toy with a visible string), it could be really scary.

Honestly, I can't think of any movies that would benefit from a remake. I either liked them the first time around or I didn't.

And really, all the CGI in the world would not make up for a lack of Racquel Welch in "Fantastic Voyage"!

Ok, I just thought of one as I was typing. It might be interesting to see a remake of "Dune". David Lynch's version is a serious mess, imo.

Eddie and the Cruisers was great. Eddie and the Cruisers 2 sucked big time.

Well, six million barely covers an average coronary bypass these days, much less making someone better, stronger and faster!

It's already been done. There was a TV miniseries version of it a few years back and it was pretty good. There was also a sequel miniseries that combined the next two novels in the series.

Eddie and the Cruisers was great. Eddie and the Cruisers 2 sucked big time.

Probably because the first one was a fluke that got a cult audience from cable TV airings and the second one was cynically calculated to cash in on it. You can't capture lightning twice with things like that. It was weird how it flopped in its theatrical release, but caught on big time a year later on cable.

I personally loved ESPN's commercial where one guy asks "What's the best golf movie of all time?"
"Caddyshack."

"What's the worst golf movie?"
"Caddyshack II.":D

I have wondered if my favorite movie, Marty, could be re-made well. But I don't think it would fly too well considering what movie goers like these days.
Romantical flicks are often throw aways during holiday season.

Birth.

The original with Nicole Kidman that came out a year or two ago was a train wreck of a movie with an intriguing premise at its core. Hell, maybe one day I'll write the script I see in my head. I just think it could be such an interesting way of exploring grief and moving on/not moving on that it's a shame the film misfired in SO many ways.
