I'm pushing down the play/pause button but the thing isn't turning off. This wouldn't be such an issue if it didn't drain the battery.

HELP APPRECIATED!
Is the Hold button accidently switched on?

Yes
and
No
The play/pause button is functioning, but it is not shutting down like it normally does. This sucker is new. I've only had it for a little over a month!

Push the Select and Menu buttons at the same time for about 5 seconds. This will reset the iPod. You won't lose anything they just get hung sometimes.

Did you try this yet and did it work? I had the same issue with my Ipod and it worked for me.

THANKS JAMIE!!
Sorry to be so late in reporting back. As soon as I reset the thing, I'd forgotten about this thread. Haha, do I really rely on the iPod that much?? :)

Mine did this the other day at the gym. Suddenly it stopped playing and was stuck on the on position. The screen was lit up but the controls wouldn't work.
Even when I got home it was stuck on.
When the battery finally gave in, it went to that Apple symbol and I plugged it into the wall socket and that seemed to get ot back online.
Next time I will take Jamie's suggestion.

The iPod web site has a few of these problems answered on their FAQ page (

My IPOD seems to have hit the crapper today. It got frozen last night and today I haven't been able to get it going.
I get the Apple symbol and hear whirring and clicking inside the machine, then an unhappy face comes on the screen with a link to www.apple.com/support/IPOD.
Can't get the IPOD to go to the menu.
Tried "restore".
Guess I'll take it to a local Apple store and see if its kaput or fixable. I don't have a warranty anymore.

Oddly, I've had those symptoms on 2 4G iPods as a result of a bad battery; I fixed both with kits from ipodjuice.com ($30 each). Also, there's lots of info on troublehooting at ilounge.com and the portable audio subforum at Headfi.org.
With regards to the warranty, the iPod is the one product on earth for which I would advise purchasing the extended warranty.

Two things you can do:
1) put it in pause and then remove the earphone plug from the jack. It should shut down in about :10 seconds or less.
2) if not, you may have a "partial crash" (which I've seen many times from the six or seven iPods I own). Put the iPod back into an AC adapter -- not one connected to a computer. Hold down the Menu and Select (center button) for about five or six seconds. That will force a hard reboot.
I have never been able to do a hard reboot unless the iPod was connected to external AC power. At least with the 60G & 80G models, they can't be reset unless they're sitting in the cradle.

Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna keep trying to get it going. But if all fails, I'll buy a refurb 30G from Apple ($199) since Apple wants over $200 for any major repair on my old (20G) model.

Well, first, don't give up on it. At the worst, just let the thing play for X number of hours until the battery goes dead. Then, hook it back up to the computer, and it'll reboot for sure.
If you're concerned about it, do a complete wipe-and-restore, reformat the drive, and copy all your songs back on the iPod.
If you absolutely must buy a new iPod, you might want to wait. Word on the street has it that there will be new iPods later on this summer that will have an entirely new interface, based on the upcoming iPhone (bigger screen, cooler design). Toshiba also now has a 100-gig 1.8" drive, so it's possible a bigger-capacity iPod is on the horizon.

Hi,
Jamie is right, just reset it if stuck! Works most every time and you won't lose your tunes.

yes they been pumping out 100 gig drives for months now, they are not for the phones...they have to be for forthcoming ipods and they have to be coming soon (cause my 60 gig is getting old and i'm gonna need this soon)...i'm anxiously awaiting one of these....

If you can't wait for the 100-gig iPods, iPod Parts (
http://www.ipodparts.com/ipodpartscenter5g.htm) is offering the 100-gig drive right now, provided you're willing to open up your existing 5th-gen iPod and put it in yourself. It costs a small fortune, but it can be done.
Me personally, I want to see an "audiophile iPod" that can record WAV files and has an S/PDIF output. And costs under a grand.
