Inspired by the Philips commercial, what was your first CD player? Mine was a Toshiba(October 1985); it had a flip-out door like a cassette deck, similar to, though not exactly like, the cheaper tabletop players of recent years.

I ended up swapping it out for a more conventional tray-type Toshiba player, which still works to this day(and plays most CD-R's), after I troubleshot a skipping problem to vibrations from my speakers, which were nowhere near the thing!

Sony CDP 100 (same as the 101, but without the remote).

I don't remember the model or anything but it was a "boombox" style portable. I do know that I bought it in May 1990 with some money for my high school graduation. For portable music, I had been listening to cassettes. Direct track access was my favorite part of this new technology.

I picked up a National brand (Panasonic) player on a trip to Hong Kong in 1984 or thereabouts.

Basic black box with play, pause, next, and stop buttons.

If I remember correctly, paid around $800 US for it.

Mine was Decemer 1986 (Christmas gift). It was from Radio Shack. I couldn't tell you the model number. I remember that it was relatively small size-wise by the standards of that time (a little huge by today's standards). I think it worked under HEAVY use for about 5 or 6 years before it died. My next player was a Pioneer LD/CD/Video CD/Karoke player, which I got around 1990 or 1991. I still own it today and it still works great (although its no longer my primary player).

My father purchased a Sony CDP-101 in late 1983 in Chula Vista, CA. IIRC he paid just under $1,000.00. We went to Tower on Sports Arena BLVD. and he purchased two CD's. Michael Jackson - Thriller was one, and I "think" Journey - Escape was the other.

I didn't get my first CDP until April 1988 for my 20th. birthday. It was a late transition for me. It was a Pioneer that was part of a component system. I don't remember the number.

I do, however, own (4) vintage CDP's now... all in MINT / LIKE NEW condition and they all play great. Some have a better soundstage than others. Here they are:

Yamaha CD-1 (1983)
Technics SL-P500 (1986)
RCA CD188 CD (1986)
Yamaha CDX-910U (1988)

The one mentioned here, (the front top loader) http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=103098
Though it had a Magnavox name on it.
I know the ad says '84 but I swear I bought in '82.

A Denon DCD-1520 in 1988, still works very well and use it sometimes, had it serviced last spring.

Mine was a 2nd generation Pioneer PD-5010 and still works today. It won't play CD-R's and still skips if you look at it suddenly. It didn't have the TOC calender style display or time clock, just track number and a CD subcode output. I saved up 3 paychecks for that thing. In 1984. first player I ever saw was a Technics player with flip out door and LED VU meters. It was playing "Don't Look Back" by Boston(found out that the CD was a Japanese import) and the player cost $1300.

Meridian 207 Pro. I bought it in February 1988. Best sounding cd player I could find at the time. It only lasted 7 years before it started mistracking badly and I had to get rid of it.

Sony boombox in 1985 -- cost me something like $550 which was a fortune for a student. My first CD's (which as I recall also were very expensive $25 each?) purchased -- Madonna' Like a Virgin on Sire ("full digital recording"!!) and The Four Seasons by Seiji Ozawa and the BSO on Telarc. I still have those discs, pretty beat up 20 years down the road, but great memories.

That's amazing. I love high-end Denon stuff. Was that one made in Japan? -- there aren't too many left. I think even the top of the line Universal players from Denon are now assembled in China.

A Kenwood something-or-other -- bought it in June 1987 at Crazy Eddie for $160.00 (his prices were INSANE). :D I still have it but it won't play track 1 on any disc and sounds rather dull compared to my newer Sony deck. I keep it for nostalgia.

I'd have to look on the back to see if it was made in Japan but I believe it was...$1188(CAD) in 1988.
And only times it was in for service was to clean the line out level pot and a cd drawer adjustment/general checkup.
