I just noticed for the first time that when I insert an HDCD encoded CD into my computer that it brings up a logo in my Media Player stating that the CD is HDCD encoded. Now, I know that HDCD is proprietary to Microsoft so all things are possible...but, does Media Player include an HDCD decoder to playback the resolution?

Yes it does. It sounds crappy on my 16-bit soundcard. I think you need 20 or 24-bit soundcard to get good sound out of the HDCD Media Player, since HDCD is 20-bit.

HDCD, in the dirty paws of Microsoft, is likely to be more of a starting point for a newer, proprietary codec they will try to ram down our throats.

I thought HDCD was proprietery to Pacific Microsonics or some such. ?

Pacific Microsonics is Microsoft.
Almost. Microsoft bought Pacific Microsonics - and HDCD.
An interesting side note: Some of Neil Young's recent albums such as Silver and Gold are HDCD encoded. After Microsoft bought Pac. Microsonics, his newest releases are NOT HDCD encoded.
I guess they want to get those crappy, run-of-the-mill computer speakers to sound better....

Haven't thought of it like that before.
Good thought.
BTW are you a MAC user by chance? :)

I recently decided to stick to Windows, as the switch from the original (the REAL) Macintosh OS to OSX is too much for me. I'm not going to invest time, money and effort in a marginal OS.
That doesn't mean I love Windows. It's just an OS.

Microsoft is rapidly developing code to compete with MP4, etc. It is charging less for a license.
Richard.
