A reportedly biographical film, although the content may not be accurate to Dylan's real life. Different actors portray him at different stages in his life, including an African American (Benz Antione) and a woman (Cate Blanchett). (That sounds vaguely reminiscent of that biographical stage play Yoko produced in NYC about John Lennon.) I have only read snippets about it in the press, either enthusiastically praising it as a work of genius, or decrying it as a complete non-sensical and utterly unendurable mess. There seems to be no middle ground.

I found this link to a story in a local Quebec paper about the film. The text is in French but there are accompanying photographs of Cate Blanchett in costume.

Thanks, Jack. Lack of consensus of opinion can be a good sign.

And merci for the link.

Pardon the digression, but my translation application is often more fun than drugs ever were. I ran Le Journal's article through sherlock and got this.

"If the walkers who venture in the park of Strong Chambly saw the
actress and member elect of a Oscar Cate Blanchett (The Aviator) or
the American actor Richard Gere (Pretty Woman) Monday August 21, it
was not necessary for them to be gripped. They were quite present in
order to turn the scenes of film telling the life of the singer folk
and rockor Bob Dylan.

The Burgundy avenue even was closed with circulation a part of the day
of the street Langevin to the primary school Jacques-With Chambly
whose court was used as parking to the team of turning.

The journalists are never welcome on the spot of turning, but it was
possible to discuss with two agents monitoring. "I have been here for
three hours of the morning", acknowledged one of them. Even if the
days are stretched over one period from 12 to 3 p.m., they are said
well treated especially in what milked with the service of
delicatessen. The turning of the film I' m not there occupied the
places one day and half. 200 observers came to recreate the groupies
this still alive legend of the music at the time of a spectacle in the
open air given at the time of New England Jazz & Folk Festival. Cate
Blanchett interprets Bob Dylan of the end of 1960 which is put at the
electric guitar and which brewed the cage of the music while Richard
Gere takes the features of oldest of Dylan. The actors form part of a
quota of six actors, of which Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain) which
will interpret the musician in different from his life and its music.

The realization of film is ensured by the independent realizer Todd
Haynes who collected four nominations with the Oscar thanks to Far
from Heaven.

The film set moves its home towards Montreal where the team will turn
of the scenes of film until October 10. The film should be presented
at next Festival of Cannes according to desires' of its producers."

"brewed the cage of the music---my machine seems to eat french publicity and excrete Dylan lyrics!

I found this interesting quick review on www.searching for a gem:

13 Jul 2007: Thanks to "HwyCDRrev" for this message from Internet newsgroup rec.music.dylan from Kelly Fourke: "Earlier this week I had the incredible honour or sitting in with Todd Haynes and cinematographer Ed Lachman for a screening of “I'm Not There” while they approved the final colour timing for the film. First thing off is both Todd (who invited me to the screening) and Ed were the most absolutely nicest, friendly people. The movie was a lot to take in as the experimental approach to this "biopic" made it more demanding than a straight life of kind of movie. If you're a fan it's a lot of fun to spot the ways the film makers weaved Dylan "fact" and "fiction" together and jumped from actor to actor playing Dylan at different times and situations. As an example, in the Christian Bale "version" of Bob after he becomes a Christian he leaves the music industry to became a ordained minister and is performing Pressing On in a church basement. Another interesting part is a sequence where the dialogue is all lines from She's Your Lover Now. I don't want to give to much away, "spoilers" if you will, because I figure most people reading this post are going to see this fascinating interpretation of Bob's "life" and they'd like to come to it ready to be surprised. I will say that there's a lot of Bob's own versions of his songs but also a healthy amount of covers including, as a couple of standouts, Sonic Youth doing "I'm Not There" and My Mourning Jacket doing "Going To Acapulco". Finally Todd said they will, of course, be offering Bob the opportunity to see the film if he wants to see it."
