Hey Steve...did you have a chance to ask Hal Blaine if he played on Turn Turn, Turn?
Just curious. After listening to some Byrds Outakes from the 2nd LP sessions, now I'm not so sure.

Yes, I asked him. I had to really get him to focus for a minute, and I hummed him a bit of the intro, and played the drum part on the table for him (upsetting my water glass in the process :( )
Here's the deal. Hal was brought in initally to do the drum part, 'cause they wanted something fancy for the single. Hal laid it down, and then later, Michael learned it lick by lick and HE is playing on the record. Hal's version was just used as a guide track.
So, he isn't on the record, but in a sense they ARE his licks.
He has an AFM sheet on the song that he will dig out and bring in (when he gets inspired)...

Wow, thanks Steve, for asking Hal for us.
Thats some story.....that they had a Hal Blaine track and didnt use it.....sounds like band politics to me!!!
Well, at least now we know who is on the record.
It was VERY nice of you to ask him...so thanks, Big guy!!

Hey Steve, just thought I'd pass along Roger's comments:
"Pretty crafty of Terry Melcher to do that eh?
Say hi to Hal for me."

Thanks Steve for passing that along! Would you say that Michael Clarke engaged in a form of "virtual sampling"?

Angel,
This morning Hal did a little spontaneous drumming demonstration of The Ronetts' "Be My Baby". I asked him how many times the music track was overdubbed or bounced. He said "none".
I looked over to Larry Levine and he nodded.
Wow. The Wall Of Sound in one pass. Awesome.

You might know this yourself, Steve... Did Goldstar have wood floors? I have a video of Larry walking around a very small studio explaining how "it was very much like this studio" and the majority of the walls were wood...

I don't know actually. I can ask him for you. I doubt it though, judging by the photos I've seen...
